From Fibre to Fabric
These images show the different stages in production of silk fabric at
Whitchurch Silk Mill. Click on each image to see a larger version.

1. Winding silk on to bobbins

2. Bobbins on the creel

3. The silk from bobbins on the creel is threaded
through a reed
|

4. When it has passed through 3 reeds the silk is wound on to
the warping mill
|

5. The warp is made up from small sections of about 5cm which
are repeated
|

6. When all the sections have been wound the warp
is ready to be taken off
|
|

8. Each warp thread is threaded on to the loom shafts
|
|
|

7. The warp is wound on to a wooden beam which is
then carried to, and put on one of our looms
|

9. The loom is then ready to weave
|
|
|

10. The finished article - a silk stole woven at
the mill
