Oral History Project

Can you help us ?

We have been lucky to be granted funding by the Heritage Lottery Fund for our oral history project. This project, through a series of recorded interviews, is seeking to put together an archive of memories of the Mill prior to 1985.

Very little is known of this period in terms of who worked at the Mill, and what they did. In 1956 when the long term Mill owner, Mr James Hide, died, all records and archives at the Mill were destroyed.

The project has started well, and we have already interviewed Ted Moss and his wife Rita, who have been able to give us a wealth of information, both having worked at the Mill for nearly 40 years. Ted retired in the late 1970's having been the Mill's manager for nearly 30 years.

We have also been fortunate to record an interview with Mr Peter Walters, who with his partner Roger Linton, became owners of the Mill in 1956, for the sum of just £4000 at auction.

We still need to make contact with more people who have a connection with the Mill prior to 1985. If you are interested in making a contribution to this project, then please contact the project co-ordinator, Luba Nurse via the Mill. Luba will contact you to arrange for one of our volunteers to come and record an interview with you. Luba can be contacted on luba.nurse@btinternet.com

With the material gathered from the project we hope to be able to write a new guidebook, enhance our interpretation and produce a travelling exhibition. So, even if you did not work at the Mill, but just have some old photographs, we really would be pleased to see them.
